Special Bonds: Connections breeders make with their puppies

Quinn & Rover’s Summer 2023 Litter

While time commitment may be the biggest sacrifice a breeder makes in raising puppies, I argue that it’s time well-spent. Not only is that puppy being set-up for their future life with their adopter, but they are learning what love is and what it can be before they meet their true forever home.

Raising a Puppy from birth

Being right there with mama dog and taking care of the puppies from the start can lay a true foundation for an unbreakable connection and special bond. We are there to help clean up their messes, track growth, and be there for all of their important and exciting milestones: eyes opening, taking first steps, first bark/growl, etc.

We can also start that socialization process for our young puppies early by starting ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation), and continuing to handle and pet them throughout every day to get them used to being held. By building this strong foundation, our puppies get to know human connection with us and begin to rely on us and love us for all of the love and care we’ve given them thus far.

Connecting with and defining personalities

Quinn & Dodger’s “Nora”

All puppies have different personalities. They can be really hard to differentiate early-on as they are still developing their own traits and growing up. While older puppies can be easier to see distinct temperaments, our younger puppies are still learning who they are. As the breeder, we can see a puppy go from hand-shy to eager to be pet and loved on. These traits change all the time, but by watching closely every day, there are little things about each puppy that can stick out more than others.

The pressure’s on the breeder to properly and adequately define each puppies’ personality for our adopters, so that they can get the puppy they are looking for. Knowing more from our adopters about what they’re looking for, can greatly help the process of pairing puppy to adopter and narrowing down options, so each pup meets their perfect match! This is part of why we require a Questionnaire & Application from our adopters. We need to make sure our pups go to the perfect home, and that we can do our best to make the right pairings for both our puppies and for our adopters.

Saying goodbye

Quinn & Dodger’s “Lucky”

Saying goodbye to our puppies before they go to their new homes is always hard. It’s honestly the hardest part of breeding for so many of us. We grow such close bonds with them, and while we’re so happy that they’ve found their perfect match, it’s also bittersweet to see them go. That bond is so special, and we treasure watching them grow closer to their forever families.

Puppies of the week

Quinn’s current litter of puppies is 4 weeks old, and they have been waddlin’ and toddlin’ everywhere! We finally got them in a playpen yesterday, and they’ve been enjoying the extra space to walk and play and paw at one another. They are so cute, and we’re starting to see little differences in each of their personalities this week! Read more about each of them in their listings below.
