5 Signs That A Cavapoo Is Right For You

A lot of people don’t realize that breed characteristics and contribute greatly to a dog’s overall demeanor. It’s simple but it’s like you shouldn’t expect a super laid-back and lazy Golden Retriever, when a Golden Retriever is naturally more outgoing! Before you start searching for which dog is the cutest, first consider the breed of the dog, and research if that breed generally fits what you’re looking for in your next furry companion! In this week’s blog post, we'll explore the Cavapoo breed to see if it checks all your boxes!

Extreme Loyalty

In general, Cavapoos are known to be very loyal, and are looking for someone to be their very best friend. Some even say they’re clingy, but who can resist such a cute teddy bear face? When they love people, they love with their entire heart. They tend to be very people-oriented and social dogs, but at the end of the day, they’ll always prefer their primary owner.

I co-own Quinn (a mom here at Red Carpet Doodles), and while she’s at home with my husband most days, she’s still most loyal to me. As much as she’s eager to get attention and love from others, she’s always at my side when given the opportunity. I would say that Cavapoos get their fun sociable side from their poodle parents, while their fierce loyalty comes more from their Cavalier parents. When combined, it brings out the best of both worlds. They’re nice and sociable, eager to meet new people, but also are able to give the ultimate companionship to their primary owners.

Trainability

Quinn & Rover’s F1B Cavapoo Girl, “Cassie” Now Owned by Marilyn in NY

Cavapoos are extremely eager-to-please. They want nothing more than to make their owners happy. When we adopted our cavapoo, we didn’t even need to use treats to motivate her. Overall, she was just super happy to be pet and told “good girl,” when she did a behavior we liked. Of course treats help, and most cavapoos are extremely treat-motivated, but in general, see what motivates your cavapoo most and use it to your advantage. They’re eager to be told they’re good. They want nothing more than your affection and pride in them.

One of Quinn’s daughters, Cassie (formerly “Sunshine”) attended Capital Canines Training Facility in New York this past weekend. We were impressed to see that they had a write up that included videos of how well Cassie was adjusting to the training and overall experience. She had no nervousness or fear upon arriving at the training center, and was very eager to learn and treat-motivated with all of the tricks they started teaching her. We loved seeing the report that was sent to Cassie’s owner. It’s fun to see how our puppies progress, and it just goes to show how smart that breed can be! They get the best parts of the poodle smarts combined with the eagerness to please from their Cavalier background.

Gentle

Most cavapoos are very, very gentle when playing with puppies or smaller dogs. Quinn, along with several other cavapoo puppies we’ve raised, adore playtime with smaller dogs. Quinn gets down on their level and plays with them without a problem. We’ve never feared that she would purposely hurt anyone because she’s just super friendly, but we have feared that maybe she’d play a bit too rough... But no, we shouldn’t worry about that at all! Even with our small teacup yorkie (3.5 lbs), she plays super gentle and careful. She’s eager to keep her playmates happy and only plays with them as long as they’re willing. So if you have a toy breed and you’re looking for more of a 15 lb range dog, no worries. They’re as gentle as can be with smaller dogs, but vicious as ever when it comes to chewing up those chew toys.

Loving

You want a sweet dog? Look no further. Cavapoos might just be as sweet as it gets as far as dog breeds come. Past their fierce loyalty, you’ll find that they’re eager to lick your face and show you how much they love you. Whenever I come home from work, Quinn is peeking through the window ready to greet me when I walk through the door. She’s super loving and excited to see me. This is pretty typical for a lot of dogs, but I’ve found that it’s a very strong and prominent trait with most cavapoos.

Adaptability

For the most part, cavapoos are extremely adaptable to their living situations. If you give them the space to run, they utilize it! They love a good run and to stretch their legs, and what dog doesn’t? Most cavapoos also enjoy to laze around the house too, but of course it depends on the overall temperament of dog you end up adopting.

Quinn was a fairly laid-back puppy before we adopted her, and now she’s the most playful dog I’ve ever owned. Her parents were always outgoing and fun-loving, but her temperament change may also be because we allowed her to have more space to run and enjoy herself. I’ve found that when we do limit her space, she’s very calm and adapts quickly to suit it. Less running space? No problem. She’s still her happy-self as long as she gets to be close to her people.

Conclusion

Not sure whether a cavapoo would be a good match for you? Just think about what they would need from you in return. Cavapoos are looking for a best friend. Someone they can spend lots of time with. While they’ll always prefer you, they’re also willing to have fun and play with other dogs and people, so maybe get them a babysitter while you’re gone, or be sure to kennel train them early (which should be easy as they’re super trainable). They adapt great to just about any environment you put them in, and are also hypoallergenic!
