The Benefits of Microchipping Your Pet

As a breeder who’s committed to ensuring life-long health and wellness of your future furry family member, we strongly recommend microchips for our outgoing puppies. A microchip is worth so much more than the additional fee that we charge!

Microchip compared with a grain of rice

What is a Microchip? What Does it Do?

A microchip is a little chip about the size of a grain of rice that comes pre-installed with a number, usually about 9, 10, or even 15 digits long. It’s easiest to think of this as just a form of identification. There’s not much more to it. If you don’t register the microchip, identification is the only use that chip will have.

When your pet is lost, they’ll be taken to a local shelter or veterinarian. At that point, they will scan your pet for a microchip. At that point, they’ll be able to come up with the pet’s microchip number, and then use that number to look them up the number on a microchip registry to see if it’s attached to anyone. Unfortunately if it’s without a microchip or unclaimed for a certain amount of time, they will put the pet down. In an effort to prevent this from happening, we highly recommend microchipping them as soon as you get them!

Common Misconceptions about Microchips

There’s this big misconception out there that a microchip is used primarily as a location-tracker. This has never been true. We don’t believe in putting a GPS in your pet. You’d never know who would be able to track you or your dog’s location if that was accessible online. The primary use of a microchip is to help your dog be identified and found when lost.

Microchips do not cause any lifelong health risks to the dog. In fact, most of the time when we insert microchips for our outgoing puppies, they won’t even flinch or whine during the insertion. There’s no research to show a statistically significant relationship between pets with microchips and pets with cancer or lifelong illness. This fact is backed up by the American Veterinarian Medical Association. (Link to their FAQ’s on the button below! There’s some great reading there!)

Registering A Microchip is a Lot Easier Than it Looks!

In order for your lost pet to be found, it’s incredibly important to make sure that their microchip number is registered and connected to you, the owner! Otherwise, the shelter would look up the chip and have no clue who your furry family member belongs to! As breeders, we unfortunately see this all the time. People purchase a microchip without registering, and then when they lose their dog they’re not able to find them as easily. If you don’t plan on registering your chip, you may as well avoid purchasing it altogether!

There are a lot of Microchip Registries out there! There are veterinarians and shelters that will also register the chip for you if you’re getting microchipping services through them, but they do charge a yearly service fee. There’s only one microchip registry that we use, that we really love, and that we recommend for our outgoing puppies! 24Pet is a completely free-to-use microchip registry. There are no initial fees or yearly fees, it’s just plain and simple whether you’re a pet professional or a pet parent. It’s very easy to sign up.

Follow these steps:

1. Go to 24Pet's Website: 24Pet

2. Click on the button "I Am A Pet Parent."

3. Click "Create Account from Microchip Number," and follow the instructions!

Please note that 24Pet has recently added some optional payment memberships. These are all completely optional. All microchips registered through 24Pet include 24Petwatch, which will continue to allow pet professionals to contact you regarding your lost pet through your microchip!
