Temperament Testing Our Puppies

Here at Red Carpet Doodles, we believe there is a perfect home for every pup! By understanding our puppy adopters’ needs, we are able to recommend the ideal puppy by their temperaments. This is why we don’t allow our customers to simply “pick a puppy” without discussing with us what they are looking for! We want the match to be perfect between our puppy adopter and our puppies!

When Do You Temperament Test?

This changes all the time with each litter, but we usually start getting a grasp on personalities at the 5 week age. Of course these temperaments can develop with time, so we like to update our website to reflect those changes as we notice them.

How Do You Temperament Test?

We are not professionals at this by any means. Our methods are very simplistic. We don’t let this stop us from giving you the most information you need to make a decision on which puppy to move forward with. We simply sit with each puppy both individually and among its littermates or among a smaller group of littermates.

What Behaviors and Attributes Do You Look For?

As far as demeanor or overall “temperament,” we look for whether they are laid-back, moderate, or outgoing. Most of our puppies fall under the moderate temperament category. We don’t enjoy breeding hyper dogs, so most of our outgoing pups are just moderately so, as they’ll all enjoy being laid-back as well.

We also look to see how friendly or open they are to seeing new environments. Are they confident? Are they cautious? How eager are they to explore? Do they stick by our side more? How sweet are they? Getting to know each puppy is crucial for us to decide whether our puppies are good fits for our buyers and vice versa.

As our puppies get older, we also like to see how committed they are to one person. In our experience, this behavior isn’t usually exhibited until the puppy reaches the 12 week stage. At that point, we will sit with them in the office and see how they react to visiting puppy adopters, or members of our family that they’re less familiar with.

Puppies of the Week

We temperament tested Lainey & Jett’s litter on Tuesday in anticipation for our waiting list to pick among the girls next Thursday! Bek had lots of fun sitting in the office and enjoying their company and seeing both how they interacted with each other, and how they interacted with her one-on-one. Read more about each of our puppies’ personalities below!
